Revaluation of abilities
When Ginny Tomlinson (a nurse) is wounded, Dale Barbara makes her the subject of an operation. After the successful operation, Ginny says that she “ought to get up and pitch in.” However, Barbie says that if she tries it, the only pitching she will do “will be straight down to the floor.” The irony is because despite the fact that Ginny is wounded, she thinks she will be able to move mountains.
The irony of fate
At the beginning of the novel, Barbie can see how the airplane crashes into the dome. It is not only a sad moment of the novel, but it also has some irony. Claudie and Chuck are pilots of the airplane, before the flight, Claudie exclaims that it is a “beautiful goddam day”, but “their lives have another forty seconds to run.” The irony is that despite the beautiful day, fate decides to make their day ultimate and terrible.
Murderous addiction
There occurs a very disgusting moment, when characters of this novel kill other people. The author compares committing murder with potato chips. “Murder is similarity to Lay’s potato chips: it is hard to stop with just one.” It sounds not only humorous. The irony is that playing with destinies of people is very easy for antagonists of the novel as eating chips. It is an addiction, which destroys humaneness.
