Arjun
At the start, he was just another Brahmin, but when his fate is darkened by a fateful twist, he loses his sister into slavery, and he himself gets sold into slavery of a different kind, separated from her. They did not spare his uncle, so he spends the first days of slavery mourning his uncle. When he is sold to an elephant owner to care for them, he trains in martial arts, and he sets off on an elephant to find his sister. Instead, he becomes a legend. When he is captured and sold into slavery again, he knows he will succeed and he feels peaceful with his new fate.
The marauders
Throughout the novel, two different gangs of bandits find Arjun and strip him of his privilege and wealth. They are a force of nature, it seems, because Arjun suffers the same fate in a cycle, constantly rising to power, just to have it taken away by highwaymen. The first gang of bandits murdered Arjun's uncle and stole his sister for themselves. Arjun spends his glory days fighting evil-doers such as these.
