The Curriculum
The first chapter of the memoir begins with Mitch Albom summarizing and foreshadowing what the reader is about to read. His old college professor, Morrie Schwartz, used the final months of his life to teach him about the subjects of life. Instead of graduation, there would be a funeral. The final exam is this book.
The chapter then flashes back to 1979 the day Mitch graduated from Brandeis College. He gave his favorite professor a thank-you gift of a monogrammed briefcase and promised to keep in touch.
