Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow Background

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a coming-of-age novel written by American author Gabrielle Zevin. It was published in July of 2022 by Knopf. The premise of the novel revolves around the world of video gaming while addressing the themes of friendship, identity, and love.

The narrative takes place over the course of 30 years and charts the lives of the characters from childhood onwards. In their younger years, Sam and Sadie shared a deep friendship that was based on their love for video games. However, a misunderstanding leads to them falling out until years later when they meet as college students. They reconnect in Los Angeles and begin designing a game with their individual set of skills that they believe will take off. With the help of Marx, they manage to create a video game that becomes successful and skyrockets them to fame. After they establish their company, their desires start to differ as they dispute over who gets the credit for their success. Since Sam is disabled, he uses video games as an escape while chasing popularity. Meanwhile, Sadie is interested in their artistry.

As an avid gamer, Zevin incorporates many references to early video games as an ode to the art of playing and designing games. Kirkus Reviews wrote “Readers who recognize the references will enjoy them, and those who don't can look them up and/or simply absorb them. Zevin’s delight in her characters, their qualities, and their projects sprinkles a layer of fairy dust over the whole enterprise.” In 2021, Paramount won the rights in an auction to adapt the novel into a feature film.
