Major Archie Gates
He is a U.S. Army Special Agent who is nearing his retirement. After spending a long time in Iraq, Major Gates has developed an indifference towards the atrocities of war. He teams up with Troy Barlow, Chief Elgin, and Conrad Vig in pursuit of the Kuwaiti gold stolen by Saddam Hussain. However, Major Gates has a significant development in his character as he decides to help the rebels against the troops of Saddam. His character development is trigged by the relentless treatment of the Iraqi civilians by the hands of Saddam's troops.
Sergeant First Class Troy Barlow
Troy Barlow is the one who finds the map of Saddam's bunkers. He is an intelligent officer who is ready to tread a step further for his family's future. Although, he is a part of Major Archie's team in the hunt for Kuwaiti gold, but he refuses to incur any additional risk. He advices Major Archie against helping the civilians initially, imploring him to focus on the plan i.e. the Kuwaiti gold. However, towards the end, he himself upholds the virtue of humanity above the fear of death and the possibility of being court-martialed.
Staff Sergeant Chief Elgin
Chief Elgin believes that he is protected by a divine ring of "Jesus fire". He believes himself to be protected from all evil and harm by this divine force. He follows Major Archie into the mission and stands by him even when their plan is blown to smithereens. He is a kind and noble soul, who risks his life for his brothers in arms as well as for the Iraqi civilians.
Private First Class Conrad Vig
Conrad Vig is a young and enthusiastic soldier who has not seen any action in the war. He reveres Troy Barlow, and considers him as his best friend. When Barlow is captured by Saddam's troops, Conrad feels enraged and falls into despondency. When the two of them are reunited, Conrad is shot and he ultimately dies.
Amir Abdullah
He is an Iraqi rebel who is captured by Saddam's troops. He had his education in the United States and, thus, speaks English proficiently. He helps Archie, Elgin, and Vig to find their fellow soldier Troy Barlow. Later, he, along with the other Iraqi rebels, is helped in crossing the Iraqi border into Iran.
