The poem opens with the speaker announcing that she is reaching out to the world, sending it a "letter" in the form of this poem. She then comments, with a bit of melancholy, that the world has never made the same effort to reach her. But, as she notes, she did learn of the world through observation of nature's majesty, which conveyed "simple news." The speaker relates that this message was conveyed to hands that she cannot see, meaning this message retained a great deal of its elusiveness. Finally, the speaker aligns herself with nature, hoping that her "countrymen" understand that her pulling away from the world was in service of exploring these mysteries and wonders of nature.
