The Speaker
The speaker is nominally the poet herself. She remains unnamed but establishes herself as subject through a first-person point of view. In the opening line, she announces that the poem is “my letter to the world,” emphasizing the personal nature of the text. She portrays herself as isolated and unaccepted by the world around her, as is made clear when she states that the world has written no letters to her. Further on, she describes her fascination with nature and attempts to better understand its "majesty." She concludes the poem with a note about hoping that her "countrymen" who appreciate nature can see her artistic efforts (and resulting quirks) more clearly, as she has spent her time working towards solving some of its mysteries.
