The Year They Burned the Books Summary

The book starts with Jamie Crawford arguing with Terry Gage and Nomi Pembar at Wilson High Telegraph’s office. Telegraph is the name given to the school’s magazine. Jamie, Nomi, and Terry are students at Wilson High. Jamie is the senior editor, Terry sports editor, and Nomi art editor of the Telegraph. While having the conversation, the three students are joined by Matt Caggin and Cindy Nash. Matt is a faculty adviser and Cindy is an ad manager. The subject of interest for conversation is about an editorial post supporting the distribution of condoms. Jamie wrote an article that drew the attention of everyone.

Parents, staff members, and students are giving out their opinions about the newly implemented health policy. The heated debate about the topics of safe sex and homosexuality occurs among all the Wilson’s High School stakeholders. The conservative parents are against homosexuality and the distribution of condoms in the school. The newly elected member of the School Board, Lisa Buel, is among the parents who are appalled by the new policy. Jamie along with Terry are homosexuals.

When homosexual students decide to come out and reveal their real sexual identity, they are isolated by fellow students. However, the discrimination against homosexual students does not demoralize them. Although influential parents like Buel try to rebuke them using religious morals, Jamie and her peers remain steadfast. Buel orchestrates the burning of library books about homosexuality, but the action does not stop homosexual students from doing what they believe is right for them.
