The last sentence of the book is "No eye is on the sparrow but he did tell me that." What does this mean? Go back and read the entire paragraph for clues.
Didion first uses the phrase "no eye is on the sparrow" in chapter 17, when she is discussing her childhood experience with religion. She explains that it means no one (i.e. god) was watching over her or the world--things just happened and the world changed and shaped itself. By repeating this again at the end of the book, Didion highlights her belief in the ultimate meaninglessness of everything--people die, but the world continues to run and change, and you must accept that.
