The Wrong End of the Telescope Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Moria Refugee Camp

Moria refugee camp symbolizes the negative effects of war and terrorism. Syria is one of the countries in the world that is badly hit by the wave of terrorism and war. People like Sumaiya have spent most of their lives in refugee camps. Life in a refugee camp is miserable because of inadequate resources such as water, food, and medical care. When Mina’s friend sets up an NGO in the Moria refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece, she invites Mina to come and assist in offering medical care.

Stigma

Mina‘s decision to live away from her home for several decades because of her transgender identity symbolizes stigma. In the Arabic world, same-sex marriages are a sin, and anyone caught in the act is either killed or stigmatized. Due to stigma, Mina decides to go miles away and live in the West, where she comfortably marries a fellow female.

The symbolism of Islam

The hijab won by the woman mopping the floor symbolizes the Muslim religion. Mina comes from a Muslim world, where doctrines are harsh, especially to women. The Muslim religion requires women to wear hijabs and cover their faces. According to Mina, forcing women to wear hijab violates women's rights because they should be free to define their dress code as long as it conforms to societal expectations.
