    What is the significance of the narrator’s mother’s opening command? How does this set up the memoir as a whole?

    The narrator’s memoir begins with the words, “You must not tell anyone.” Ironically, a memoir by definition is a book written from personal knowledge, often about the author’s own life. This opening command sets up the narrator’s memoir as something done under the table, against her own mother’s wishes. The opening command also tells us a little bit about the narrator’s mother, a figure with strong opinions and who exerts much influence over the narrator.
