The War on Normal People Themes

Unemployment

Big corporations are employing lesser people since automation can do most of the work. Other sectors, such as manufacturing, food service, administration, transportation, and retail, opt to automate their work to compete. Automation is preferable because it produces significant labor results compared to humans, which encourages their layoffs.

Technology

The number of jobs in the big brand companies is dramatically decreasing. These companies choose to raise productivity by hiring fewer people and adding automation. Automation is significantly threatening white-collar jobs that involve routine activities like doctors, accountants, etc. Tesla Company is on the course of substituting truck drivers with self-driving trucks, a perfect case of automation's adverse effects.

America's Jobs

The job system of America is gradually breaking down and needs replacement. The next recession will render several people jobless as automation will replace them. The loss of jobs to automation is what Yang references as the War on Normal People. The war will force Normal people who have only primary education and degrees to get other degrees and jobs resistant to automation. If not, they can learn to find meaning outside of a standard job and create the job themselves.

Human Capitalism

Human capitalism argues that humanity is more important than money and that the economy's unit should be each person and not each dollar. Yang encourages the creation of more human-centered capitalism. The government should make policies that will ensure people are not losing jobs due to automation. The government can, for instance, establish a local digital currency in the more underprivileged parts of the nation. The people are also encouraged to focus on work that resists automation.

Basic Universal Income in the Real World

Yang argues that a Universal Basic Income (UBI) program is essential if we have to ensure people's basic needs are met. To create and pay for this program, Yang believes that a 10% value-added tax be added to all goods and services. The universal basic income will mitigate the impacts brought by automation.
