Ashton bumps into Beau and his girlfriend, Nicole, while they are drunk. Beau and Nicole are an item and it appears they are struggling to drive their way back home. Ashton offers to drive them home to Beau’s surprise. Beau and Ashton are childhood friends but not in talking terms. The two childhood friends severed ties after Ashton started dating Sawyer. Sawyer is Beau’s cousin and has gone on summer vacation with his family. Therefore, Ashton feels lonely and wants someone to hold a conversation with. During their childhood stage, Beau and Ashton were stubborn and attached to each other.

Ashton and Beau start reminding each other about their past life. The memories make Ashton get romantically attracted to Beau. However, the love between her and Sawyer as well as her parents’ disapproval of Beau complicate matters. Love is a strong feeling and can act wonders. Despite all the obstacles, Ashton defies her parents and leaves her boyfriend, Sawyer, for Beau. Sawyer is disappointed to learn that Ashton has fallen in love with his cousin. The relationship between the two creates a wedge between Sawyer and Beau.

Beau’s personality is unpredictable because he seems unconcerned about snatching his cousin’s girlfriend. Sawyer is devastated and plans to retaliate. Therefore, when Ashton’s cousin, Lana, comes to visit them, Sawyer sees it as an opportunity to revenge against his former lover. Lana is Sawyer’s secret admirer since childhood but she has low self-esteem. Sawyer starts to date Lana to make Ashton feel bad but in the end, finds himself embedded in real love. The book discusses teen relationships and their impacts.
