Emma Boisgris
After completing high school, Emma, traveled to Paris to study medicine and become a doctor like her father. In Paris, she rented an apartment in the district of Pigalle. Away from home and her parent’s prying eyes, Emma finds herself working as a nude dancer at a local club. It has been years since her departure and now she reminisces on her innocent past. Nonetheless, Emma has made peace with her new identity; she understands that going back is never an option.
Ishmael
Ishmael is a young man from Haiti who has sought political refuge in Paris after provoking a few powerful government representatives back home. Emma is first introduced to Ishmael by their mutual friend Max and agrees to host Ishmael in her apartment. Ishmael is attracted to Emma’s beauty but fears being emasculated by a woman who has had much experience dealing with different men. Emma desires an honest romantic relationship but fears that Ishmael is not the kind of man who remains faithful to one woman. Emma and Ishmael share an indifferent but amusing relationship. As the novel concludes, Ishmael returns to Haiti where he is captured and executed.
Max
Max and Emma have been friends for some time. Despite their slim connection, Max and Emma help each other whenever one is in trouble. Max was born and raised in Pigalle, over the years he has established himself as the jack of all trades. He is the first person people go to whenever they need any information provided they pay for his services.
The Landlord
Emma’s landlord is briefly mentioned, but the author portrays him as an inconsiderate racist who only cares about money.
