The Things We Cannot Say Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Film canister

The film canister symbolizes the atrocities of the Nazi Regime. Tomasz hopes to give the film canister to the British soldiers to help him escape Poland with her fiancé, Alina. The British soldiers will be interested in reviewing the film canister to establish how Auschwitz concentration camp was exterminated with all its occupants by the Nazi regime.

Alina’s pregnancy

Alina’s pregnancy symbolizes her new beginning. After Tomasz exchanges his identity with Soul, he remains in Poland. Alina and Soul leave for Russia as they try to access the United Kingdom. While in Russia, Alina discovers she is pregnant and gets married to Soul to avoid stigma. Alina shows the British soldiers the film canister, and they accompany them to the UK. Later, the British soldiers send Soul and Alina to the United States of America, where Alina gives birth to Julita. Alina and Soul live as a couple for 50 years until he dies, but they never consummate their marriage. Therefore, Alina’s pregnancy is an important symbol, signifying her new life with Soul away from her true love, Tomasz. Tomasz sacrifices his life to save Alina and their unborn baby.

Ashes

When Alina and Soul die, Alice takes their ashes to Poland and buries them beside Tomasz's grave. The ashes symbolize family reunion. After she visits Poland, Alice discovers that her biological grandfather is Tomasz, but he exchanges his identity with Soul to save Alina. Alice appreciates Soul for taking up his new role of caring for Alina and her daughter, Julita, Alice's mother. Alice meets her new family members in Poland, and they live happily afterward.
