One of the biggest examples of situational irony in the story is how the adults' fear of Daniel reacting badly to being reprimanded for his emotional volatility is a large part of what allows the accident to happen that night. Even though they thought they were managing his moods, their inaction ends with the death of two people, the serious injury of another, and the imprisonment of Daniel.
Fin's Injury
In an example of situational irony, Fin is just beginning to find himself as a rugby player when he sadly becomes paralyzed in the accident.

Kylie Revealing their Past
Ironically, Kylie revealing the family's past, which Tom has been nervous will separate him from their new community, in fact ends up bringing him and his newfound mates together. This is an example of situational irony.
The Big Game
In an example of dramatic irony, the reader learns that the football game that the St. John's team plays right before the accident is a "sudden death" match. While we are aware of the events that happen soon afterward, the characters sadly have no idea.
