How do the past and present mirror each other in Chapter 5? Why do you think the two converge in this chapter for the first time?

In both past and present scenes of Chapter 5, Hagar sets out in search of independence. One could imagine that Hagar’s decision to go to Shadow Point is influenced by experience going to Mr. Oatley’s when she was younger. On the other hand, one could also imagine that taking this trip to Shadow Point is what reminds her of her earlier journey. That is, past and present are intertwined in almost indistinguishably.
