Martin
Martin is the main character of the novel, as well as the protagonist. A young teenage boy, Martin has a sister named Cassie, who is a Wonder Baby. He lives in a community under a dome that is harshly governed and brainwashes its citizens. However, Martin is trying to beat the system, and when the government takes away his little sister, he goes after her.
With his robotic dog, Chip, Martin escapes from the dome and tries to find his sister. Contrary to popular belief, the world outside the dome is actually pretty nice, and Martin believes he will never return. The story ends on a cliffhanger, just when Martin is about to find his sister.
Cassie
Cassie is Martin's younger sister, and is considered a Wonder Baby. In the place where they live, children are not created by conventional standards - instead, they are genetically engineered in a laboratory, and sent to families that want them. Cassie came from a rather special batch called Wonder Babies, which are set apart by their intelligence and social awkwardness.
Wonder Babies are dangerous to the atmosphere of the community, so Cassie is taken away by the government. The plot of the story revolves around Martin trying to find Cassie after she was taken away. Although Cassie is an integral part of the plot, readers are not very well acquainted with her, making her neither a static nor dynamic character.
Martin's Parents
Martin's parents very much blend together, because they are both rule-following subjects of the community they live in. Each day, they watch the required news on TV, and they will not do anything to hide from the government. Martin's father works with materials that come in and leave from the city, but he still does not seem very suspicious. For sure, Martin's parents are static characters, but they still are important in Martin's personal life.
Chip
Chip is Martin's robotic dog that he received for his birthday. Chip was supposed to have software in him that made him dumbed-down for the population, but someone in the factory removed that. Now, Martin has access to a dog that is very intelligent and can lead him through complex times. Chip has all of the traits of a normal dog, and leads readers to question where the line is between life and artificial intelligence.
