Elitism through literature
Though literary devices are often used to convey deeper meanings, they can also be used to highly the stark difference in life. Whilst Lima and Belano like to think of themselves as superior to others, and indeed, later Juan seems to perpetuate this image as well, we see that they are not quite as intelligent as one might think when Lupe calls them out for not understanding even colloquial terms.
Hedonism
The portrayals of characters such as Belano and Lima is a nod to the hedonistic lifestyle of free thinkers such as literary creatives. They embody this idea through their travels, sexual habits, and general attitude towards life.
