Situational irony: dropping out of university
It is ironic that Juan drops out of university to pursue his passion for poetry which he thinks will be done through joining the Visceral Realists. However, he ends up engaging in more conflicts and selling marijuana to make a living, therefore making the reason for dropping out of university darkly ironic.
Verbal irony: Elitist attitude
Poetry and the arts is a way of opening up discussions and expressing freedom of speech. This is what encourages Juan to join. However, Lima and Belano like to think it is only for exclusive members and indeed their elitist mindset is at stark contrast to what it means to be a poet.
