The Road Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

The Road follows in a long tradition of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic narratives. Consider other works in this genre, such as The Handmaid's Tale or Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood, The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells, The Last Book in the Universe, by Rodman Philbrick, or The Dog Stars by Peter Heller.

Also consider other books about quests and journeys. One of the most recognizable works in the genre is The Odyssey by Homer. Others include Jack Kerouac's On the Road or J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. For insight into the genre and its tropes, consider The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell.
