The Rent Collector Metaphors and Similes

Fortune-teller

In her dream, Sang Ly’s grandfather, “bends close, squints his eyes at mine, and peeks into my thoughts as though he were the village fortune teller.” The metaphoric ‘fortune-teller’ alludes to the grandfather’s capability to discern Sang Ly’s thoughts and to predict.

Jungle spider

Sang Ly elucidates, “ The place (Stung Meanchey) is mountainous, covering over 100 acres. Piles of putrid rubbish tower hundreds of feet high, surrounded by constantly shifting valleys that weave and connect like the web of jungle spider.” The rhetorical spider underscores the convolutedness of the rubbish. Piling of enormous volumes of rubbish crafts tangling monuments which resemble spider networks.

Ants

Sang Ly narrates, “Just as ants do when their nest is disturbed, we return, survey the damage (Bulldozer damage), and then without hesitation immediately get to work rebuilding.” The figurative ants highlight the industrious nature of the inhabitants especially in the reconstruction of the shelters that have been flattened by the bulldozers. Bulldozers do not dishearten the inhabitants from setting up novel structures.
