The Real Life of Sebastian Knight was penned by Vladimir Nabokov between 1938 and 1939 and saw publication in 1941, during his residence in Paris. The legend surrounding this work suggests that Nabokov wrote it while seated on a toilet, using a plank across a bidet as his makeshift writing desk.
