HIV
HIV stands for the human immunodeficiency virus, and is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. It is possible to contract HIV through unprotected sex or the sharing of used hypodermic needles.
AIDS
AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency virus. It is an aggressive and debilitating virus that can be fatal without the necessary medicine.
Plague
An infectious disease that affects the body, spread through contact or the air. It can wipe out large chunks of a country's or continent's population if left untreated, as it did in Europe in the 1340s, a period referred to as 'The Black Death'.
Dystopia
In literature, a dystopia is an imaginary land, most often set in the future, where society has broken down and social norms are not obeyed. Dystopic novels include Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's 1984.
