Your students may at first find it challenging to ground themselves in the world of The Quiet American. After all, Greene's narrator jumps right into the action, and it's up to the reader to figure out where and when the book is set. (We don't even learn that the novel takes place in Saigon until several pages into the first chapter!) Therefore, students will likely find it useful to learn more about the time and region in which the novel is set.
