Alice travels with her father, Duke Ansirus, on pilgrimages from a young age. This is unusual for the time because the journey to the Holy Lands can be dangerous. Alice treasures this time with her father and it helps them build a loving father daughter relationship that includes mutual respect of one another. Duke Ansirus loves his daughter and wants only the best for her. As he grows older, he knows that she will need a husband to care for their estate when he is gone. He has raised Alice to be a strong independent woman who can run the estate on her own, but this would not be accepted by the people.
Ansirus chooses his cousin, Count Madoc to be his daughter’s husband. Madoc, who is part Morgan le Fay’s entourage, attempts to take over the estate while Alice and her father are away on a pilgrimage. As they travel, they hear of how he is insinuating himself into the life that he believes is his right. The people do not like him and how he is taking over.
On their journey home, Ansirus and Alice stay at the monastery of St. Martin’s. Ansirus wishes to spend his last days at the monastery once he knows that his daughter is taken care of. Alexander comes to the monastery on hearing that the monks have received the Holy Grail from a young Prince who escaped the Frankish Kingdom with the relic. Once he meets Alice, he forgets about Morgan le Fay and his quest to get the Grail for her. Alexander and Alice fall in love at first sight.
Alice tells her father that she wants to marry Alexander and not Count Madoc. Ansirus approves of Alexander and does not care for how Count Madoc has taken possession of his home. Alice and Alexander are married at the monastery before the party journeys to Castle Rose, Ansirus and Alice’s home.
