The Other Side of Truth Background

The Other Side of Truth was published in 2000. It was inspired by real-life events from 1995 and is told from the perspective of a young girl named Sade Solaja, who immigrated from Nigeria at a young age after her mother was shot and killed by the Nigerian government, and her father was nearly assassinated by the government as well in the same instance. In the novel, Sade looks back at her early, struggle-filled life in Nigeria and her new life in England, where she lives in the foster care system with her brother. There, Sade and her brother must deal with the police and school bullies while trying to reconnect with their father, whom they love dearly. Ultimately, Sade, her brother, and her father meet up in London one day, where they all live together peacefully.

A sequel to The Other Side of Truth was published in 2006, reflecting the original novel's popularity. That sequel is called A Web of Lies and follows Sade and their family as they wait in England for asylum to be granted to their family. Both novels received very positive reviews when they were published. In their review of The Other Side of Truth, Kirkus Reviews said, "Far from being a patronizing glimpse of life in the third world, [The Other Side of Truth] is a vivid portrayal of complex people caught in complex webs using their own culture for strength in a time of need. Real-world scary."
