The Crackwalker
A two-act play that explores the dark lives of marginalized individuals in the town of Kingston, Ontario. Theresa is a mentally unstable woman who is in a dysfunctional relationship with Alan. Despite their flaws, they strive to find love and start a family. Due to their indecisiveness, their baby dies and Alan begins to question his feelings for Theresa. Alan and Theresa are friends with Sandy and Joe who have an unhealthy relationship that’s based on sex, violence, submission, and drugs.
A homeless man, commonly referred to as Crackwalker, has made a name for himself for being the neighborhood’s symbol of failure and despair that the inhabitants utilize to make themselves feel superior. Crackwalker later becomes an essential member of the community who aids Alan at his most dire moment.
Pink
Pink’s monologue commences with the burial of Lucy’s nanny, Nellie, who was shot and killed in a protest March against apartheid rule. Lucy is a ten-year-old white girl living in apartheid South Africa. She is completely devastated by Nellie’s death as she deeply cries over her coffin. Nellie and Lucy shared a bond that was deeper than blood. She took care of her and always picked up after her.
Their relationship showcases how children from well-off families were provided with outsourced rearing. This service offered wealthy parents enough time to live their lives without a care for future dysfunctions that arise from this kind of upbringing. Lucy is passionate as she boldly expresses her views on apartheid. She criticizes the segregation system for censoring and diminishing real African voices.
Tornado
A one-act radio play about Mandy, a social worker who has been trying to have a baby to save her marriage. Unfortunately, she is found to be infertile and naturally forced to act desperately by conning a client into putting up her newborn for adoption. Through the play, Mandy is in constant conflict with her need to control things and the devastating thought of surrendering that control and coming face to face with her reality.
Motherhood is a very sacred element of this play that seeks to inspire responsible and able parents. Mandy is determined to have a baby and nothing will deter her from that goal. Her enthusiasm for wanting a baby saves her marriage. Mandy however has to come to terms with her reality after she is completely cornered trying to abduct a baby.
I Am Yours
Thompson utilizes this full-length play by exploring the dire need for people to belong. Desperately seeking attention and affection, Dee manipulates her husband, sister, and lover into doing her bidding. She is a deeply damaged person who easily crumbles if she doesn’t surround herself with people who cherish her.
Through her manipulations, she gains a lot of power and will which she unapologetically abuses. Dee commands her husband and mocks him when she’s having an affair. She is a master of disguise as she showcases an innocent and pure personality when in truth, Dee is a conniving woman who has a lot of darkness bottled up inside.
