Irony of Crackwalker
Crackwalker is a symbol of failure in his village because people have no hope for him. For instance, villagers say that Crackwalker can be equated to nothing because he has no value in society. Ironically, towards the end of the story, Crackwalker is depicted as the most important person because he helps Alan get out of trouble. Therefore, the satire of Crackwalker teaches readers not to despise any person. Every individual is important, and must be respected despite their limitations.
The irony of apartheid
Apartheid was a common practice in South Africa where Africans were segregated and denied access to equal access to resources as their white counterparts. Satirically, the whites were the minority group but gained dominance through controlling vital resources in the country. The majority, who were Africans, were subjected to poverty.
The Irony of Lucy
Lucy is a privileged white kid living among the rich. Despite being white, Lucy is not happy with how the minority whites treat blacks in South Africa. For instance, blacks are not given access to vital facilities such as schools, hospitals, and recreational facilities. Ironically, Lucy feels sorry for Africans because most whites believe that blacks are inferior.
The irony of Nellie
Nellie is Lucy's grandmother, and she belongs in the white community. Sardonically, Nellie joins the protests against the apartheid regime in South Africa. The whites are the minority group but control the country's economy, which denies Africans economic freedom. Nellie is a white woman, but she does not like the way the blacks are treated. Therefore, she joins a protest against apartheid to voice her concerns. Unfortunately, Nellie is among the people who are shot, and she dies.
The irony of motherhood
Motherhood is a gift from God, and every woman long to be a mother one day. Mandy is not an exception because she is doing everything to have a baby to become a mother and save her marriage. Unfortunately, Mandy is infertile, and doctors tell her that it is hard for her to have a baby naturally. Ironically, after hearing the sad news, Mandy decides that the best way to have a baby is through abduction.
