Who is the old gringo?
The protagonist of this novel is "the old gringo," which is clearly a nickname. This nickname suggests a sense of age, wisdom, and experience. Indeed, he is often treated as a father-figure by many of the other characters. It is later revealed that the old gringo is actually American writer Ambrose Bierce, who went missing while visiting Mexico in 1913. As such, this novel is a speculative account of what might have happened to the author.
