The Old Gringo Background

The Old Gringo Background

Carlos Fuentes' The Old Gringo is about a man named Ambrose Bierce. He is an American writer, soldier, and journalist. It tells the story about some of his days in Mexico around Pancho Villa's soldiers. It mostly talks about his encounter with General Tomas Arroyo of another country. In the end, they try to form an alliance but their beliefs and opinions are too far apart. With that they both decide to not form an alliance and it starts a conflict.

Carlos Fuentes is a Mexican writer. In Mexico, he is very well known for many of his other books. While all of his books are in Spanish, almost all are translated to English.

When released, The Old Gringo was liked by quite a few reviewers. Writes Publisher's Weekly: "Fuentes, Mexico's leading novelist (author of Terra Nostra), invents here a lyrical and philosophical tale about the times of Pancho Villa and the Revolution in Mexico." Kirkus Reviews thought similarly, writing that... "[The book is] Excessively hectoring and deterministic, a book that's unusually soapy and obvious from a writer as often adroit as Fuentes."
