The Night Hazel Came to Town Metaphors and Similes

Doing Murphy a favor

Lee notices very quickly that Murphy has very little regard for consequences when it comes to a big story. He compares doing Murphy a favor to shooting craps after he almost gets arrested while on one of his outings. Lee will soon discover that he also has the tendency to disregard everything in the face of journalism, and it’s what will make him a reporter at the end.

Wearing beliefs like clothing

Upon meeting Angela’s friend Lee notices that all of them are dressed similarly in black but also differently according to their interests and beliefs. After talking to Angela he discovers that she has a similar contempt for them because of their pretense in the form of outerwear. She comments that they believe in everything and nothing, wearing their beliefs like clothing.

Marilyn Bell

In a very questionable decision, both on moral and legal terms, the crew of Telegram decide to hijack an ambulance to get a first story from Marilyn Bell, a young swimmer that made a great feat by swimming over Lake Ontario. Upon arriving to the spot and seeing the state the young girl is in, Lee suddenly realizes the wrongness of it all. He thinks to himself that he wants to push all the newsmen out of her way because they treat her like a tasty ice cream children fight over, and not a human being.

Drown for a good story

Lee saves a man from drowning and decides it will be a good story for Telegram. He arrives to the building and is immediately praised for the story which will make great news. After telling his superior that he almost drowned for it, he nonchalantly answers that he is expected to drown for a good story. It has both literal, in accordance to the situation, and metaphorical meaning, i.e. he is supposed to do whatever it takes for a good story.
