Lee Kendall
Born and raised in Ontario, Lee, the protagonist, leaves his hometown and moves to Toronto hoping to create a better future for himself. Through hard work and determination, Lee lands a job as a copyboy for a local newspaper. With time, he moves up the ranks and becomes a novice journalist accomplishing his goal in life.
Murphy
Murphy is a skilled but drunk journalist who helps Lee get his first job at the newspaper. He and Lee are close friends, however, Lee is not happy with his drinking habits.
Angela
When Lee moves to Toronto, he shares an apartment with a woman, Angela, who is nine years older than him. Lee falls in love with the would-be actress but Angela does not share the same feelings.

Lee’s father is a withdrawn widower who became distant after losing his wife. He, however, understood his son’s decision to leave home and make a better life for himself.
