The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is a memoir by American actress Issa Rae. Published by 37 Ink in 2015, the book explores Rae's life and chronicles her experiences as an introverted African-American girl in a collection of stories and essays.
Titled after a web series of the same name, Rae navigates a world that is both strange and harsh to her. Being an introvert and black don't necessarily mix well in a world that runs on what's cool and culturally accepted. In this entertaining rollercoaster, Rae experiences love, heartbreaks, friendship, work, and hobbies like rapping while trying to find her place in the world. Her witty personality enables her to explore the contemporary social world of the internet.
Through all the chaos of the internet, Rae learns to accept and love herself for who she is, as opposed to trying to fit into a fake world that is mentally draining. As a writer, she is on a mission to address the prejudice against black women and the short-sightedness of how Hollywood portrays women of color. The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl was nominated for the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Humor.
