The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975 Film) Irony

The nun

The first thing the viewer learns about Katharina is that she is called a "nun" by her friends because she is less keen to party her life away and was known for bailing on her friends during these times. Because of this initial description, it is ironic to see how she quickly gave herself to Ludwig shortly after meeting him.

Get dressed

After Katharina spent a night with Ludwig, her apartment was searched the very next day. The search was conducted at such an early hour Katharina had no chance to get dressed and make herself presentable. When the police officers searched her home, one of the commanding officers sent her to get dressed, claiming she had no place to be indecent. Katharina reminded them, ironically, that they were in her home and as such she was free to dress as she pleased.

Rather stay in a cell

Around noon during the first day of the interrogations, the people who interrogated Katharina were getting ready to have lunch. Katharina was told to remain in the same room as them or, she was offered the possibility of being take to a cell. Ironically, to maintain her integrity, Katharina insisted she be taken to a cell, instead of being held in an office where she had to look the ones who captured her in the face constantly.

I am not allowed to say anything

After interrogating Katharina for the first time, the press demanded to be let in on what was found. Kommissar Beizmenne excuses himself time and time again, claiming he is not allowed to give the press any information regarding the case. Ironically, just a few moments later he meets with Werner Tötges, a reporter to whom he gives everything he had on Katharina up until that moment.

The press will always tell the truth

In the film, the press claims they will always tell the truth, no matter what. This becomes a common motif in the film, being repeated over and over again. Still,as it is quickly proven, this is not true. Ironically, instead of presenting the truth, the press distorts the truth to fit their intentions and to present the events in the most sensational way possible, all in order to benefit their own agenda.
