Joaquin Murieta
The anti-hero of the story, Joaquin Murieta is a character who faces only disappointment from his fellow men whom he admired which turns him into the most infamous and vicious of Californian bandits. Despite his reputation, he still follows some elements of morality, respecting women and protecting them and sparing those who show him kindness.
Three-Fingered Jack
Manuel Garcia, or nickname Three-Fingered Jack because of having only three fingers on his dominant hand, is one of Murieta's right-hand man. He is described as a man of unflinching bravery, but cruel and thirsty for blood.
Reyes Feliz
Reyes Feliz joined Murieta's gang as a boy of barely sixteen years. The romantic aspect of Murieta's cause made him join, and he sees Murieta as a role-model. Murieta's beloved Rosita is his sister.
Joaquin Valenzuela
Valenzuela is another member of Murieta's band of outlaws. He is much older and has had experience before joining. He is often confused for his leader and after Murieta will be the one to lead, but with not much success.
Captain Henry Love
A reputable man who sets on a long chase after Murieta and company ending up killing him unknowing of the man's identity.
Rosita
Rosita is Murieta's beloved who is described as feminine force able to tame him. She is with him until the end, devoted to follow him in his dangerous path.
