The narrative explores the idea of the human civilization restarting on a clean slate and the consequences of such a policy. It highlights the dangers of fanaticism and blind conformity toward creating a future that is devoid of history. The protagonist has to save the human race from completely eradicating its past through the power of storytelling.
The year is 2061 and a comet that threatens all life on the planet is about to hit Earth. Petra and her family are among the selected few chosen to continue the human race on a different planet. The journey involves putting the occupants to sleep for close to 400 years and awakening upon arrival on planet Sagan. A team of monitors has been given the responsibility to cater to the passengers and the spaceship. However, during the expedition, they form the Collective which erases any trace of human history and memories through reprogramming. The coup also involves the purging of some key passengers aboard the ships. They take it upon themselves to enact their authority on the society that will land on Sagan. Petra is the only passenger to survive the reprogramming and it is up to her to save humanity from blind servitude.
Through oral history, she passes down human history and Earth memories to the young passengers. Meanwhile, she seeks to find the colony that is free of the Collective’s influence that landed on the planet. The author blends folklore and science fiction to demonstrate the significance of oral tradition and storytelling in shaping societies. It also highlights the drawbacks of misguided endeavors to eliminate individualism and human history to foster unanimity and compliance.
