    Mother/Daughter Relationships

    Kind of Activity:

    Classwide Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will be able to participate in a discussion about mother/daughter relationships in the text.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.11-12.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.2

    Structure:

    To begin the activity, ask students to name some of the themes they’ve noticed in the book so far. Make a list of students’ answers on the board. Students will likely mention themes like danger, superstition, tradition, the immigrant experience, and mother/daughter relationships. If mother/daughter relationships is not on the list, make sure you suggest it or prompt students to suggest it.
