The Hope Chest Themes

Mental Fortitude

Each of the protagonists -- Rani, Reshma, and Ruth -- are all faced with enormous challenges everyday. Their lives are unpredictable and demanding. Each of the women takes a different approach to these expectations, but they all demonstrate enormous growth and mental fortitude in this challenge. For instance, Rani is in the hospital because of a damaged relationship between her mind and body, presenting itself in anorexia. She learns to accept herself where she's at, rather than trying to achieve perfect health overnight.

Perseverance

Related to the above theme, these women are strong because they all master the skill of perseverance. Unable to avoid their problems, they all pursue health and wholeness as is manageable. Nobody is looking to master anything overnight; instead they make their problems manageable by believing in the value of perseverance. Reshma demonstrates this transformation best in her faithful service to her new husband. At first, she was completely overwhelmed and unprepared for his demands. Since she has no other choice than to be successful, however, she faces the challenge with a daily goal. Every day she makes some minor improvement. With time and perseverance, she's changed her responsibilities from impossible task to delightful challenge. Having achieved success in small, manageable portions, she proves to herself that she can indeed be successful.

Solidarity

Ruth and Rani develop a keen bond while Rani is undergoing treatment. Their relationship is simultaneously professional and personal because Ruth is helping Rani to change her patterns of thought. In order to accomplish this and to help her patient, she must personally engage with Rani's story by becoming vulnerable herself. In Ruth's admission of insecurity and weariness, she invites Rani to be honest about her own struggles. Together they help raise one another up, through solidarity and encouragement.
