The Hope Chest Characters

The Hope Chest Character List

Rani

Rani is a troubled middle-classed Pakistani woman. She's troubled by guilt for feeling lost in the midst of her privilege. She checks into a hospital in London for anorexia because she has a compulsive relationship to weight loss. Through the care of Ruth and the staff there she gains some perspective about her distress. Although she feels incapable and crazy, Rani determines to fight through whatever trials this illness has in store for her. She will be healthy again.

Reshma

Reshma is Rani's gardener's daughter. She lives in Pakistan and, according to custom, must find a husband to support her as she approaches adolescence. Marriage is a huge transition for her and especially scary because she marries a stranger. Although she is challenged by his seemingly impossible demands and tight purse strings, Reshma possesses the fortitude to survive and prosper in this new situation. In a little time she is a thriving housewife.

Ruth

Ruth is nurse in London. Her ordinary world consists of witnessing daily traumas and ministering to an endless string of troubled people. When Rani walks in, she makes an immediate connection with Ruth because of her attitude. Ruth is an indomitable woman -- capable of more than she appears. Her patient persistence challenges Rani to take her illness one day at a time.

Reshma's Husband

Reshma's husband is a much older man than she. He's exacting in how he wants his household to be run, but he grants Reshma considerable freedom of execution. He does not assert his authority in her private affairs so long as she anticipates his desires. Needless to say the marriage takes some time to adapt.
