The irony of age
The most incredible irony in the novel is that only young children can detect the presence of ghosts. Adults rely on children for their safety, which is contradictory in reality. Children are supposed to look up to adults for security and protection. In addition, the physic detectors and investigators working in different agencies are underage. For instance, Lucy is only 15 years. However, she is the most successful investigator in London and its environs.
The irony of the skull
The skull is a ghost who works alongside Lucy and fellow physic investigators. Unlike other deadly ghosts, the skull is friendly and willing to help Lucy detect and destroy the available ghosts in London. Therefore, despite the skull belonging to the family of ghosts causing havoc in London, it behaves differently to benefit humanity.
Exclusion of Lockwood and co. from the Chelsea case
Lockwood and Co. is the most recognized physic investigative agency because of its success story. Ironically, when ghosts infest Chelsea, the authority intentionally excludes Lockwood and Co. from this important exercise concerning the safety of the people. Unfortunately, the agencies tasked with eliminating ghosts from Chelsea fail terribly because they need to be more competent.
