The Heart of the Matter Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    To read with attention to ambiguous and symbolic language regarding religious practice and cross-cultural (mis)understanding.

    To identify common themes in an unfamiliar context and setting.

  3. 3

    To trace themes and characters as they develop through the novel. ie: an earlier suicide that foreshadows Scobie's death, or Louise's gradual understanding of her role as a wife and bereaved mother.

  4. 4

    To connect the setting and events of the novel to broader historical themes.

  5. 5

    To understand and use unfamiliar vocabulary that is also time and place...
