Why doesn't Scobie want to take communion?
He can't take communion unless he's confessed, repented, and received absolution. He will not repent his adulty with Helen, and therefore cannot even begin the process.
It may be that Scobie does not want to receive absolution. But for what act or crime? His adultery? His inability to truly make Louise happy? Or does it go back to the unseen, barely mentioned moment when he missed the death of his only child? It would not be beyond comprehension that Scobie wants to be found guilty, creating a situation in which there is little moral ambiguity.
