“For you’ve caused the loss of many souls by your wantonness.
Now you’ll have to answer not just for yourself,”
The quote from above is uttered by the abbot soon after he met with the prostitute. The reason why the abbot uttered those words is because the woman said she did not saw herself as being responsible for the actions of the men who came to her looking for pleasure. The abbot however did not agreed with her and instead reminded her that because she was the one who felicitated their sin, she will be held accountable for that as well. This quote is important because it transmits an important idea about the time when the story was written. In those times, men were relatively free to do what they wanted without being criticized. Women on the other hand, were blamed both for their sins and for the sins of the men they came in contact with.
“This plan doesn’t seem wise
Because the Jews might stone you.
Don’t go there, Master.”
When Jesus heard about Lazarus’ illness, he decided to go back to Judea and help his friend. The apostles, hearing this, told their master that it is not a good idea for him to return to Judea because the religious leaders in the city were trying to kill him. Jesus refused to let himself be ruled by fear and went anyway, even though he was well aware of the dangers he was exposing himself to. This proved that Jesus was more interested in the well-being of others rather than caring what will happen to him. This idea, of putting the well-being of other above personal preferences and safety is the main idea transmitted by the story.
“the Jews out of envy delivered Jesus Christ to me to condemn to death”
This quote appears in the beginning of the letter and is a way through which Pilate tries to claim that he was not responsible for Jesus’ death. Instead, Pilate places the blame on the religious leaders who went to Pilate to convince him to accuse Jesus. Pilate claims that he feels sorry for those who were responsible for Jesus’s death but he does not include himself in that group. However, as it was mentioned in other writings, every person is responsible for their own sin. This means that Pilate was also responsible and that he will have to answer for his actions.
