Joseph (The Lives of the Fathers)

Joseph is a character from the book of Genesis who was sold into slavery by his own brothers. Joseph is mentioned here because he remained faithful to God despite the problems he had to endure in life. He is also mentioned in the poem because he famously refused to sleep with his master’s wife, thus proving that it is possible to resist sexual temptation.

Abraham (The Lives of the Fathers)

Abraham is another character from the book of Genesis mentioned in the story. He is described as a humble man who had complete faith in God. The narrator points out that Abraham’s faith was so great that he was willing to sacrifice his only son to prove his loyalty.

Thais

Thais is the main character in the story with the same name. Thais is a woman who works as a prostitute. One day, an abbot comes to her in an attempt to try and make her change her ways. Thais is confined to her room for 3 years and after that she is forgiven for her sins. Thais decides to continue to remain in her room even though the abbot assured her that she is forgiven by God.

The abbot is the main character in the story “Thais”. He remains unnamed but is described as a holy man who wants to help his community. Because of this, he does everything he can to make sure that Thais’ soul is saved and that she receives redemption.

The men (Thais)

The men are a group who went to Thais to satisfy their sexual needs. They are not criticized by the abbot but rather seen as the victims. Instead, the blame for their sin is put on Thais.

Magdalene

Magdalene is one of the main character in “Herman de Valenciennes, The Passion of Our Lord”. She is a character from the Bible, a former prostitute, she is helped to return to God and to achieve forgiveness.

Jesus

Jesus is another character mentioned in “Herman de Valenciennes, The Passion of Our Lord”. He is called to help Lazarus get better by his sisters. Jesus is described here as being a compassionate man who would gladly do everything in his power to help those he cared about.
