The family of Anh Do is evading an oppressive regime after the end of the Vietnam War. People in Vietnam are facing difficult times. As a result, the family of Anh Do has decided to flee the country. Do is young and has a baby brother called Khoa. They set off to Australia. However, on their way to Australia, they are terrorized by pirates who rob them of their items. Luckily, a ship from German comes to their rescue. Eventually, they get into Australia. Anh Do grows up in Australia.

In Australia, the family experience a bad situation. They are not used to such kind of life. His father is not friendly and has turned into a junkie. At some point, Do’s father leaves them wallowing in poverty. Just like any other immigrants in a new country, they are discriminated against by Australians. Nonetheless, Do does not despair and pursues a law degree. Before completing the degree, he realizes that he is more of a comedian than a counsel. Therefore, he opts to pursue a comedy career. A comedy career enables him to become a celebrity.

At law school, Do was enthralled by a beautiful girl called Suzie. Later, they become married. The two are blessed with three children. Anh traces his father to Melbourne and reconciles with him. Ultimately, the family is financially stable. The family is finally happy. Ahn Do tells a story of what many immigrants go through in both home and foreign countries.
