Somewhere in North America
Wherever Mr. and Mrs. Gumbeiner are living, the sun is very “bright, affectionate and warm”. They live on the street, where there is “a movie theater” and every person knows this “wonderful place”. On “the green lawns” of their street, many friends spend time together. Their street is not like other streets. The image of the place where the old couple lives gives an impression of the peaceful and splendid town or village.
The golem
Someone with “a gray face” is walking along the street. It is a golem. Its voice is “hoarse and monotonous”. It bares its “porcelain teeth”, showing “too pink gums”. It has “a very bad complexion”. The old man thinks the stranger comes to California for his health. Such an image of the golem gives an impression of the being that does not looks like a living person.
Mr. and Mrs. Gumbeiner
Mr. and Mrs. Gumbeiner are “an old man and an old woman”, but despite their age, they “look good”. Mr. Gumbeiner has “a weak, but triumphant smile”. It can be noticed that Mr. Gumbeiner has “little strength” for work, but he does not stop controlling the household. Mrs. Gumbeiner has “pink cheeks” and Mr. Gumbeiner has “beautiful eyes”. The image of Mr. and Mrs. Gumbeiner gives an impression about the perfect couple, of people who live peacefully.
