Overwhelming feeling of loneliness
If you wonder why people join sects or cults, abandon everything and everyone, then look at the story of Evie. She wants desperately to be a part of We, her loneliness makes her look for other sources of love and acceptance. Since her family fail to provide her with that, the girl feels as if no one in the world cares about her. Just like Evie, people of different backgrounds and social statues can leave everything behind and join a group whose ideas could only be described as extreme, because they feel and think that they are accepted. That feeling of belonging is the main reason that makes people behave irresponsibly.
The new society
Russell promises his followers to build a new society that is free from racism, evil, cruelty and whatnot. The idea of the new world can’t help but inspire a lot of young people and Russell is well aware of this fact. He uses his followers for his own benefit, feeding them with lies and promises of the better future. He is not the first one to use this idea, but people seem to forget about this trick every time. One should understand that the new society can’t be built, unless the whole mankind, or at least a nation, decides to change for the better.
Obsession
Obsession is a rather dangerous emotional state that one shouldn’t confuse with love. Almost every person in Russell’s cult is obsessed with him which means that they are not able to think critically. Every word the man utters is a command for them. They would do everything for him just to make him happy. As the result, 9 innocent people are killed and even more people are left emotionally broken. Obsession should be treated like a decease. There is nothing beautiful or healthy about it.
