Crime Scenes
All the crime scenes that were hinted at in Harriett's diary were gruesome and reminiscent of the phrases from the Book of Leviticus. The depiction of a religious text in such a way hinted at the psychological tendency of a person to hurt women, using religion as an excuse.
Harriett's Last Photograph
The last photograph of Harriett's has Harriett looking towards someone with terror in her eyes. This photograph proves to be the ultimate clue that someone was stalking her and that her disappearance wasn't sudden or unplanned.
Hedeby
The island is described to be on the southern edge of the town of Hedestead. It is connected to the main town by a single bridge, which proves to be an important detail in the mystery of Harriett's disappearance. The island is covered with forests which increases the sense of foreboding. The place is surrounded by water and so it's impossible for one to get out without crossing the bridge thus creating a picture of a maze with only one way out.
Lisbeth Salander
Lisbeth is described as the opposite of a regular heroine; in fact, she eats all kinds of junk, but never puts in weight. She smokes and has no want for social interaction. She seldom talks to anyone and comes across as haughty or stupid, none of which she denies. She has a lot of tattoos, including a wasp and dragon, which give her an image of foreboding. She wears black all the time in an "emo" fashion.
