The Florida Project Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Disney World

Disney World is seen in the distance of the motel. Disney is a symbol of magic and a reality that is hoped for by all kids as it's fun, and it isn't real life. It's not the life that Moonee runs away from at the end of the film.

Locked in a bathroom

Halley locks Moonee in their bathroom in their room in the motel. She does this and turns music up very loud as she has sex with a man for money. This is a symbol of the horrors children are exposed to when their parents are forced and willing to do anything to make money.

Motel

Multiple families stay in the motel where Moonee and her Mom, Halley, are living. The motel is symbol of a transient place. It is somewhere that doesn't have roots like a home; instead, it is a place that holds no commitments.

Bobby

Bobby is the motel manager who also looks after the kids who are staying there with their parents. He is a symbol of parental guidance for both the younger kids like Moonee and for the adults, like Halley who, though she has a child of her own, is in need of a great deal of support and guidance. None of which she has.

Diner

Halley is unable to get work at a local diner where her friend works. This is a symbol of the hardships of finding honest work. And with this rejection Halley runs back to what she's learned from the world of exotic dancing and willingly sells her body for sex online.
